Hvalstad, Norway 1 Dec 2025 – 3D perception (3DP), a global expert in advanced visual display solutions for simulation and training, announces the successful delivery of a next-generation visual display system upgrade for Saab’s Presentation and Maneuvering Simulator (PM-SIM). This comprehensive modernization integrates Barco’s cutting-edge projection hardware with 3DP’s proprietary automated calibration and display management technologies to enhance Saab’s critical prototyping and training capabilities.
The PM-SIM plays a vital role in Saab’s aircraft development, supporting prototyping of future aircraft functions, human-machine interface design, and flight control system validation. Housed in a 3-meter radius dome, the simulator offers a wide field of regard – +/-135° horizontally and +120°/-45° vertically – providing an immersive environment for engineering development and visitor demonstrations.
Optimized for Pilot Experience and Long-Term Use
The system delivers an ultra-realistic, immersive environment that helps pilots master complex scenarios, improve decision-making, and build confidence.

Designed for long-term use, the simulator minimizes maintenance and is fully compatible with future image generators, ensuring scalability and sustainability.
Transformative Visual Upgrade
The upgrade replaces aging LCoS projectors with ten Barco F400-N4K solid-state laser-phosphor projectors, each delivering native 4K resolution and supporting future pixel-shift to 8K at 240Hz. This leap in visual fidelity ensures ultra-smooth motion, enhanced contrast, and optimized black levels across all lighting conditions – from daylight through dusk and night.
Retrofitting and Screen Enhancement
Instead of replacing the dome, the existing structure was retrofitted with 3DP’s WarpSync™ camera-free sensor technology for precise automatic image alignment. The projection surface was also re-coated to improve contrast, reduce visual artifacts, and extend operational life.
Advanced Display Management and Calibration
At the core of the system is 3DP’s Northstar™ platform, which unifies advanced display processing, image optimization, and automated calibration using nControl™ software for centralized system management and WarpSync™ sensors for consistent alignment.
Seamless Transitions with Eclipse™ Hybrid Blending
The Eclipse™ dynamic optical blending system combines servo-controlled optical with electronic blending to deliver seamless transitions between lighting conditions. This hybrid approach eliminates overlap zones and maintains uniform black levels – especially critical during challenging transitional periods like dawn and dusk.
