Cranfield University upgrade has special significance to the company
England, United Kingdom 27 May 2021 – 3D perception AS (“3DP”) announced today the completion of a simulator visual display system upgrade at Cranfield University, supporting their aeronautical research and development activities. The unique engineering research flight simulation facility enables Cranfield University to undertake a wide variety of research programs in areas such as avionics, flight control systems, and human factors.
The technology refresh comes many years after 3DP’s delivery of the original system which was one of the company’s first installation sites. The system has been in continuous operation since it’s delivery and, according to Cranfield’s Dr. Tim Mackley, Head of Aerospace Integration Research Centre, “Our existing system had served us very well but it was simply time to take advantage of the brighter and higher resolution technologies available today and to keep the pace with our needs for research and development. The 3D perception installation ran smoothly and we were delighted with their professionalism and service.”
That original system included 3DP’s in-house developed warp and blend capable projectors, an immersive screen, and related mechanical and support structures. 3DP has since moved on from developing projectors, in favor of producing their projector and content agnostic display processer, nBox, which can power any commercial off the shelf projector with warp and blend, scenario management, dynamic eyepoint, and many other features. Based on the long-term success of the original system, Cranfield University contracted 3DP to supply and integrate the updated technologies, and provide on-site integration, training, and testing services. This was successfully completed in late March of this year.
Andy Cave, 3DP’s UK Business Development Director commented, “This is a great milestone for 3D perception, being invited back to a heritage customer and prestigious aerospace research hub. We are proud to have accomplished a quick and efficient install while helping to cement 3DP as the go-to simulation display specialists in the UK. We appreciate Cranfield University’s continuing trust in our long-lasting and extensible products. This has been a win for both Cranfield University and 3D perception with the shared goal of making our skies safer.”
ABOUT nBOX
The latest incarnation of 3D perception’s flagship display processor and manager is nBox+, which now supports up to 4K and 8K projection needs at 120Hz and 14-bit color depth and supports up to 6 channels per stackable 2U unit. nBox receives the raw image feeds from the IG, and warps, blends and color corrects the content, outputting a seamless multi-projection image. When tied to an automatic calibration system – 3DP offers several options, newly including integration with 3rd party products – the solution provides an attractive choice due to its independence, low maintenance, and high reliability.
